Word of Week #4

Last week I was reading an article on AOL News about the new discoveries of King Tut's cause of death. There were many speculations as to why he passed away at such a young age but through new DNA tests, detectives were able to narrow down the exact cause of his premature death.

The article read:
"The DNA tests determined that King Tut had a clubbed left foot and no use of his right foot, because he suffered from a lack of blood flow that leads to collapsed bones (avascular necrosis). Those ailments explain why 130 wooden sticks and staffs were found in his tomb."

The article went on to talk about the actual cause of death with no big or confusing words in the article, but clubbed feet stood out to me because I didn't know what that looked like, at least I didn't think I did.

According to Dr Foot, clubfoot is congenital foot condition that causes the following:

  • High arched foot that may have a crease across the sole of the foot.
  • The heel is drawn up.
  • The toes are pointed down.
  • The bottom of the foot (heel) is pointed away from the body. Thus, the foot is twisted in towards the other foot

An example of this would be-

Through new DNA tests, it was discovered that King Tut had a clubbed foot.
