Drinking Coffee Elsewhere (blog 7)
The short story that I read by ZZ Packer was the first story titled "Brownies". The beginning of the short story starts off with Packer and some friends on a camping trip. As I read further along, I came to realize that the events which she describes took place during her fictional childhood. Packer describes events with such color and describes things, places, and people in such a way that you can almost see them. I took note of this almost immediately. As soon as I began to read this short story, I began to picture the kids running around the camp sight and it was almost as if I could hear them as well. In the second page of the book, she describes a women by the name of Mrs. Margolin by saying "Mrs. Margolin, who always strung our troop behind her like a brood of obedient ducklings. Mrs. Margolin even looked like a mother duck- she had hair cropped close to a small ball of a head, almost no neck, and huge miraculous breasts." She writes in a way that is very easy to read and also in a way that the reader can relate.
